When exposed to the elements, the factory applied gray wash will wear away after approximately one or two seasons of use. Once this occurs, and the unfinished teak is exposed, the furniture will weather naturally and acquire the gray patina that is the characteristic of untreated teak. It is important to note that the finish will not necessarily wear away in a perfectly even fashion during the weathering process.
To maintain and prolong the life of the finish, we recommend the regular application of Rubio Monocoat's Exterior Refresh product. You may also use breathable furniture covers when the furniture is not in use, or use the furniture in a covered area.
Exterior Refresh is a transparent maintenance oil that revitalizes and prolongs the life of the furniture's original finish. Refresh should be applied 1 to 2 times per year depending on the harshness of the environment and level of exposure to the elements. Furniture used in sunnier regions (e.g., Florida) requires more frequent treatment. Use Exterior Refresh when the finish begins to look slightly dry or dull, and before the finish has worn away. Refresh will give a slightly glossy appearance to the finish.
To use Exterior Refresh, carefully follow instructions on the label. It is always recommended that you protect the surface on which the furniture is placed (patio, deck, etc.) to prevent accidental staining.
The gray wash finish is different than the color and application process of the Kingsley-Bate Instant Gray finish. The finish shown is made from natural plant oils and pigments, is low VOC, and is stain resistant.
To help prevent stains; apply the Kingsley-Bate Teak Shield
. Teak Shield is a transparent, water-based product that allows you to wipe up fresh spills. The Teak Shield should only be applied after the original finish has completely worn away.
Alternatively, you may wish to apply our Gray Exterior Maintenance Oil (GEMO) to achieve a gray appearance. It is important to note that because GEMO is a single, uniform color, the table will no longer have the complex antiqued appearance of the original finish; thus, it is not our preferred approach for the long term care of the finish. Should you wish to use the GEMO, this video demonstrates the application process
For best results, GEMO should be applied over the entire surface of the table - where the finish has worn away AND where it is still intact. Doing so will help to even-out the color; however, there may still be some variation in color due the presence of the existing finish. This is evident in the video.
IMPORTANT: Always protect the ground beneath your furniture before applying GEMO to prevent accidental staining. We will not be responsible if you apply GEMO and are not happy with the results. It is highly recommended that you try GEMO on the underside of your furniture first to see if you are pleased with the results before applying to visible surfaces.
Wipe down the furniture using warm water and a soft cloth. For moderate cleaning, add 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap to 1 quart of warm water, and wipe with a soft cloth. Rinse the table using a low hose pressure to remove any extra soap. Alternatively, you may use Rubio Monocoat's Exterior Soap following the instructions on the label.
We recommend storing in a dry, unheated garage or shed, or beneath a breathable furniture cover.
Furniture covers should be cleaned regularly before environmental deposits (dirt, etc.) are allowed to accumulate and become embedded in the fabric. We recommend spot cleaning furniture covers. Start by brushing off any loose dirt/debris, then clean using a sponge, fresh water, and mild soap.
