A good rule of thumb: your umbrella's canopy should extend approximately two feet past the table's edge or desired coverage area, giving everyone underneath comfortable shade. To find the exact size you need, start by identifying your umbrella's shape, since round, octagon, square, and rectangular canopies are each measured a little differently. For a round or octagon umbrella, close the canopy completely and measure one rib from its tip to the center pole just beneath the finial, then double that number to get the full canopy size — for example, a 48-inch rib means a 96-inch, or eight-foot, umbrella. For a square umbrella, measure one side of the canopy; for a rectangular umbrella, measure both the length and the width. It also helps to count the number of ribs and note the pole's diameter at the top, since replacement canopies are sized to match both the rib count and the frame they'll be stretched over. Because canopies from different manufacturers rarely fit interchangeably, we recommend matching your replacement to your umbrella's original brand whenever possible. You can find a full breakdown, including photos for each umbrella shape, in our blog post about how to replace an umbrella canopy.
