Depending on climate, teak will usually turn gray within 5-12 months. Teak that is covered and protected from the elements will take significantly longer to weather.
Teak turns gray because sun and rain slowly break down the natural oils and pigments at the surface of the wood, changing its honey-brown color to a soft silver-gray patina. It happens fastest in sunny, wet climates and more slowly in dry or shaded spots, and the color may look uneven at first before it settles into an even tone. Graying is only a surface change, so it does not affect the strength or durability of the wood. To keep teak's original golden color, clean it and apply a teak sealer or protector before it starts to gray. Teak that has already weathered can usually be brought back with a teak cleaner.
