Maintaining/Weathering Teak
Teak furniture requires little, if any, maintenance and can be left outdoors year-round to weather naturally. While the rate of weathering varies depending on climate, moisture and exposure to sun, your furniture will eventually acquire a beautiful silver-gray patina as the surface pigments begin to fade usually within nine months. We recommend that you allow your furniture to weather naturally this way and simply clean it thoroughly once or twice a year with soap and water.

During the weathering process you may notice "checking" or small cracks that appear in the wood. This is perfectly natural, as wood expands and contracts slightly when left outdoors. Checking is cosmetic only and in no way affects the structural integrity of the furniture. A lifting of the grain may occur on the top edges of the arms and legs. The grain will return to a smooth finish after the initial weathering process. Water spots or other discoloration may occur during the weathering process; these will even out with time.

Cleaning
First, hose down the furniture with fresh water. Avoid spraying the teak with a high pressure hose, as high pressure can erode the surface of the timber. Next, scrub the wet furniture using a soft bristle brush and a solution of 2/3 cup laundry detergent and 1/4 cup bleach in 1 gallon of warm water. When finished, rinse the entire piece with more fresh water to remove any remaining cleaning solution. This procedure is sufficient for general cleaning. For more difficult stains we recommend using Kingsley Bate Teak Cleaner. This will remove the silver-gray patina and restore the furniture to a golden brown color. For additional details please review the Kingsley Bate Care and Maintenance FAQs Sheet.

Kingsley Bate does not recommend oiling teak furniture or the use of oil based products. If done improperly, oiling can cause mildew or irregular coloring and is not covered under warranty.

Teak Care Products
Teak Protector: If you prefer to keep your teak furniture a golden color, we recommend using Kingsley Bate Teak Protector. This is a purely cosmetic application. The product will maintain the golden color for a season and can be reapplied as needed. You should wait two weeks before applying the protector to newly assembled furniture. We suggest you try it on a small area of your furniture first, such as the underside of a chair. We will not be responsible if you apply the product to your furniture and are not satisfied, or if instructions on the label are not properly followed.

Teak Cleaner: If your furniture has weathered and you wish to remove the silver-gray patina, we recommend using Kingsley Bate Teak Cleaner. The cleaner will restore the furniture to a light brown color regardless of how long the piece has been outside. This product requires no heavy scrubbing or polishing and takes approximately thirty minutes per piece to apply. NOTE: This product will not remove the gray color on furniture that has been treated with our Instant Gray product.

Teak Shield: Our Teak Shield product protects wood from food and drink stains. A completely transparent product, Kingsley Bate Teak Shield makes it difficult for stains from red wine, salad oil, and coffee to penetrate wood, so that fresh spills can be wiped away with a damp cloth. The product is also recommended for impeding mildew growth on furniture used in climates where mildew is prevalent. Teak Shield can be used on clean, naturally weathered wood, or on furniture that has been treated with our Teak Protector or Instant Gray. Apply two or more times per year depending on use and exposure.

Winter Care
Teak furniture may be left outside all year round without an outdoor furniture cover. Snow and freezing temperatures will not harm the furniture. If you prefer to store your furniture, we recommend doing so in a dry, unheated garage or garden shed. We do not recommend the use of furniture covers, as many varieties do not provide proper ventilation and can make the wood susceptible to mildew growth.

Cushions should be stored for the winter in climates exposed to snow and freezing temperatures. Cushions should be cleaned and allowed to air dry before placing into storage. Always store cushions in a dry, well ventilated area.

Indoor Use
If you choose to use your furniture indoors, we suggest that you periodically apply a thin coat of paste wax, (i.e., Briwax or Johnson's Wax). Doing so provides the teak with additional protection from natural body oils, dust, and dirt that may come in contact with the furniture.

First Time Cushion Use
Teak has oil that occurs naturally in the wood. Expect some of this oil to bleed out following the first few rainfalls. In order to protect your cushions, bring them inside before the furniture gets wet. Stains from teak oil are not covered under warranty. Once the furniture has begun to form a silver-gray patina, it is no longer necessary to bring the cushions indoors.

Cleaning Cushions
Kingsley Bate cushions are made with either Sunbrella or Outdura fabrics, a 100% solution-dyed acrylic. The fabric should be cleaned regularly before environmental deposits such as dirt, etc., are allowed to accumulate and become embedded.

Kingsley Bate strongly recommends that you do not remove the fill from your cushions when cleaning the cushion fabric. Instead, clean the cushions with the fill in place. Most cushions are 'stuffed' using specialized machinery, and it is not always possible to re-stuff the cushions by hand and achieve a professional, finished appearance.

To clean the fabric, simply brush off any loose dirt, and then clean briskly with a sponge using fresh water and a mild natural soap (Woolite is acceptable). Water temperature should be no more than 100 degree F (37 degree C), as acrylic fiber is heat sensitive at high temperatures. Do not subject the fabric to excessive heat as it will shrink. Do not steam press, iron, or dry in electric or gas dryers.

Sunbrella and Outdura Fabrics are treated with a fluorocarbon finish that acts as a sealant, making it resistant to water and stains. If you use liquid detergent instead of a natural soap to clean your cushions, it may be necessary to reapply the water repellent treatment to the fabric. We recommend using 303 Hi Tech Fabric Guard or a similar product.

If your cushion becomes saturated with water, unzip the cushion and stand it on its edge in a dry, sunny location. The zipper-side should be facing down to allow the water to drain through the opening. Cushions will typically dry in 24-48 hours depending on the level of saturation and the weather conditions during the drying process.

When cushions are not being used, you may also wish to stand them on edge within the furniture frame. Doing so will reduce the surface area exposed to the rain and allow for faster drying.

Avoid putting the fabric in direct contact with oil-based products, which may cause the fabric to age more rapidly. If direct contact with an oil-based product occurs, clean the fabric promptly.

Furniture Covers
Furniture covers should be cleaned regularly before environmental deposits (dirt, etc.) are allowed to accumulate and become embedded in the fabric. We recommend spot cleaning furniture covers. Start by brushing off any loose dirt/debris, then clean using a sponge, fresh water, and mild soap.

Why Choose Kingsley Bate?

Since 1983, American-owned company Kingsley Bate has produced premium-quality, long-lasting patio furniture.

A pioneer in the outdoor furniture market, Kingsley Bate was the first American company to use Javanese teak—sourced from the island of Java in Indonesia—in the manufacturing of its furniture. In 1983, Kingsley Bate—with the Indonesian government and its people—developed a teak furniture program in Java, ensuring that teak could be sustainably harvested without detriment to the country’s natural resources. This legacy continues today, as Kingsley Bate’s teak furniture is crafted only with premium-quality, sustainably harvested Indonesian teak and precise mortise and tenon joinery.

Though the brand’s reputation was founded on teak, its furniture designs have since expanded to incorporate the finest stainless steel, eco-Teak™, and all-weather wicker—plus protective covers and replacement cushions, slings, and parts. This combination of quality material and craftsmanship provides exterior furnishings of exceptional style and durability.

AuthenTEAK is proudly one of the largest Kingsley Bate retailers in the country, offering a wide selection of Kingsley Bate products—including one of the most comprehensive selections of Kingsley Bate protective covers and replacement cushions, slings, and parts. Not only does AuthenTEAK offer these products at the best and most up-to-date lead times, with a large Quick Ship inventory (products on their way to you within one business day), but we also have Kingsley Bate products on display in our 15,000-square-foot Atlanta showroom, so you can experience them in person and ask our team questions before making a purchase. WHAT'S NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY

This warranty does not cover and is void if damage is a result of freight/shipping, a failure caused by unreasonable or abusive use, acts of God, improper care, freeze damage, mildew, normal wear, fading and stretching of fabrics, glass breakage, glides, repairs or modifications to product after purchase, or if the customer fails to provide reasonable and necessary care and maintenance as outlined in instructions.

Teak wood is a natural material. As such, you may notice checking (small cracks), teak oil secretions, and lifting of the grain as the wood weathers outdoors. These are normal occurrences and are not covered by warranty.

Distressed teak furniture is prized for its unique character. Nicks, splits, cracks, knots, and other imperfections in the wood are an inherent part of the furniture design. Finishes are hand applied and some slight color variation is normal. By its nature, distressed teak wood planks may be somewhat uneven and may cup or bow over time due to changes in temperature, or humidity. We believe this only enriches the furniture's distressed appeal and is not covered by warranty.
