Choosing the right patio umbrella for your space is a great way to enhance the comfort and style of your outdoor oasis. There are two main types of umbrella styles: market umbrellas and cantilever umbrellas, and each offers unique benefits. What are the differences between these two umbrella types, and which one should you choose for your space?
Also known as an offset umbrella, a cantilever umbrella features a side-mounted pole that allows the canopy to hang freely over your outdoor area without central support. This design allows for more unobstructed space underneath the umbrella, making cantilever umbrellas ideal for seating, dining, or pool areas. Many cantilever umbrellas can be easily adjusted to rotate 360 degrees and tilt side-to-side and/or front-to-back, making them a versatile option that also won’t obstruct views.
Also known as center-pole umbrellas, market umbrellas feature a central pole that supports the canopy. These are the most common types of umbrellas and work well with dining tables or placed between a pair of chaise loungers.
Opening cantilever and market umbrellas is fairly straightforward. It’s always a good idea to double-check manufacturer instructions. Make sure your umbrella is safely anchored in an umbrella base or mount. Generally, you’ll need to release the locking mechanism at the base of the pole first. Use the umbrella crank or handle to extend the umbrella arm outward, and turn the crank or push the lever to open the canopy fully. For a cantilever umbrella, tilt the canopy as needed to adjust your shade. If your umbrella has a locking mechanism or pin, insert it to hold the canopy open and secure.
Choosing between a cantilever and a market umbrella depends on your specific needs and preferences. A cantilever umbrella is ideal for areas where you need unobstructed space, such as lounging areas. Market umbrellas might be best suited for dining tables or smaller spaces where a central pole is not an issue. Cantilever umbrellas offer greater flexibility with adjustable angles and 360-degree rotation, but market umbrellas are generally more stable in wind due to the central support pole.
