For both indoor and outdoor spaces, adding a rug is one of the best ways to set the foundation for furniture, break up larger areas, and make your space feel more inviting. One of the most important parts of choosing an outdoor rug is selecting the right size. Refer to this outdoor rug size guide to make sure your rug complements—rather than detracts from—your outdoor living area.
Measure to start. Before you start looking at outdoor rug sizes, measure the dimensions of your space to work out the approximate square footage you have to work with. Also, note any constraints the space may have.
Bigger is usually better. When it comes to outdoor rug sizes, it’s generally safe to err on the larger side. A small rug can make a space look smaller and feel disconnected. When in doubt, go for a larger rug to tie everything together.
For larger spaces, float outdoor lounge furniture on the middle of the rug. For smaller areas, position the front feet of furniture on the edge of the rug. Leave some floor space around the edges of the room to frame the rug.
In a dining area, all dining chairs should still be on the rug when pulled out. The general rule of thumb is to add 2 to 4 feet on each side of the table. Rectangular dining tables work best with rectangular rugs. Round tables can work with both rectangular and round rugs.
For petite spaces like balconies or porches, let available space serve as your guide for outdoor rug sizes. A 3'x5' rug will fit nicely underneath a small patio table and two chairs. You can also opt for a 2'x3' doormat by the entryway. Leave about 12″ of the floor exposed between the rug and any fixtures, walls, or adjoining spaces.
