Patio heaters are a great way to extend the use of your outdoor space and keep your porch or patio comfortable during the cooler months. Liquid propane patio heaters are a type of gas heater that uses portable propane tanks as their fuel source.
Propane heaters offer several benefits over other types of outdoor heaters. They are highly efficient, producing a significant amount of heat while consuming relatively little fuel. Additionally, propane is a clean-burning fuel, making these heaters environmentally friendly and producing minimal emissions.
There are two main types of propane patio heaters: freestanding and mounted. Freestanding heaters are portable and can be easily moved around the outdoor space as needed. They typically feature a sturdy base and a tall, slender design with a heating element at the top. Mounted heaters, on the other hand, are permanently installed and can be wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, or integrated into outdoor structures like pergolas or gazebos.
There are two types of gas-powered heaters: propane and natural gas. Propane heaters are generally more portable and versatile since the fuel is stored in refillable propane tanks. These tanks are tucked away within the heater, and tank refills are readily available at gas stations, convenience stores, supermarkets, and hardware stores. Natural gas heaters, on the other hand, require a permanent gas line connection, limiting their placement. Natural gas heaters are often used in commercial spaces.
Natural gas is typically cheaper than propane per BTU, but the installation cost of running a gas line can be significant. Propane heaters have lower upfront costs since you only need to purchase the heater and fuel tanks.
Patio heaters are rated by their British Thermal Unit (BTU) output, which determines the area they can effectively heat. Generally, a 5,000 BTU heater will warm up to 150 square feet, while a 2,000 square foot area requires around 34,000 BTUs. However, several factors influence the actual heat coverage. Lower ambient temperatures require higher BTU output to achieve comfortable conditions. Covered patios also retain heat better than open spaces.
As a rule of thumb, one freestanding patio heater can warm a 20-foot diameter circle in an open area but only around 10 feet in windy conditions. For more information on heater coverage, consult our Patio Heater Buying Guide.
When heating larger outdoor spaces, it's important to calculate the total BTU output needed and determine the optimal placement of multiple heaters for even heat distribution. A general rule of thumb is to have 20 BTUs of heat output per square foot of space.
Angling heaters towards the desired heating area can also improve heat distribution. For very large spaces over 1,500 square feet, plan to have one freestanding heater per 1,500 square foot section.
Mounted patio heaters are ideal for locations without overhead structures or coverings, as they can provide heat without taking up any floor space. They are a great choice if you want to maximize space and have a permanent heating solution.
Freestanding heaters offer more flexibility, as they can be easily moved to accommodate different setups as needed. Freestanding heaters are a great choice for outdoor spaces of all sizes and can provide heat at lower levels.
